Make web games
I remember growing up with free games on the internet that used browser plugins like flash player. If I didn't have them, my options would have been pretty limited when I was younger. Growing up with some by then already dated computers left me to always struggle to play games on steam. Team fortress 2 on my poor core 2 duo mini PC with an igpu that only gave on average 20 frames per second. Not ideal for first person shooter requiring fast reflexes. However my PC could run games like Henry Stickman, Bloons Tower Defense, Run, Stick War, and Duck Life all at full speed. On top of being able to run the games well, there was so much to choose from. Hell, my parent's are nearing their 50s and they played a ton of tower defense flash games when flash was still supported. There was something for everyone and it was all free!
The fall of flash has left a void in my heart and if you grew up around when I did, it likely left a void in your heart too. But why did web games get phased out in favor of platform specific ports? It didn't have to! You might remember people pointing towards html5 as the future for web games and thats because it was! Well... sorta. See, html5 was the future for replacing flash player videos but by itself you can't really make much it the way of games with it unless you want to do something like what I did last year for halloween. This is where web programing languages like Javascript come into play. You can make a game with javascript and use html to display it. Godot also allows you to export your games for use on the web (Source)
Programing isn't required
I can already hear it. "I don't want to learn Javascript or Godot" Well for you specifically I have the solution. Every so often the RPG Maker series will go on sale for a fraction of what it normally is. RPG Maker MV will also let you export your games for use on the web. Here is a test build of a game that I am making with it.
Click here to play the game on it's own page
It only took me 3 days to learn the basics for RPG Maker MV well enough to make this test build. This version of the game was just made with events, no fancy javascript beyond what the game engine uses by default. I plan on replacing the graphic and audio assets with my own in the final build. I also plan for there to be way more to begin with. That being said, if you are cool with your game looking like default RPG Maker assets then all the power to you. Just get out there and make whatever comes to mind. Making games is a creative outlet. Don't let not knowing how hold you back, you have to start somewhere. From that somewhere you get better with practice.
Closing note: don't upload your games to itch.io. You can host RPG maker games on your neocities sites. I don't know if neocities free tier can but supporters for sure are able to.
