Sonic's Ultimate Genesis/Mega Drive Collection

Released in 2009 (Feb 10 for NA and Feb 20 for PAL) for Xbox 360 and Playstation 3, Sonic's UGC is a collection of 48 Genesis/Mega Drive Games. Today it serves as a legal and cost effective way to physically own these games. It's important because of the delisting of sega genesis and dreamcast games from digital storefronts. I have talked about that before in this blog post. Again, this game is not really a game but rather a Emulator and a collection of Genesis/Mega Drive games. If you are not used to how emulators work, it basically allows you to play a game meant for one kind of system on other systems (oversimplified tbh). What you really need to know is that you can save + load, adjust the video setup, change the controls, and you can pause on all games.

Gremlin's Picks

48 games is a lot to choose from so I'll try to help you get started with some of my favorites

Sonic The Hedgehog
Sonic The Hedgehog 2
Sonic & Knuckles
Phantasy Star IV
Alex Kidd
Ristar
Vectorman

Meme Pick:
Sonic 3D Blast
This game makes me want to throw up. The camera sway is genuinely sickening. I have heard good things about this game so I want to try it but I can never play more then 5 minutes at a time! I love isometric games when they are done right BUT Sonic 3D Blast serves as a reminder that this style of games could have visually gone down a much worse path.

Emulating via Xenia

Emulating this game with Xenia works pretty well. To set things up without sailing the high seas you will need a disc copy of this game, a usb storage device, and a Xbox 360. Follow the instructions on the page below.

Screen tearing happens but I can't get it to show up on my recordings so I don't know what exactly is causing that. Keep in mind that you are emulating a glorified emulator and there was always going to be a level of jank involved.

Emulating via RPCS3

Emulating this game with RPCS3 is not so great. There is audio + visual issues and random slow downs that do not happen with Xenia. The main menu has two glaring issues, the text is a bit messed up and the music can only be heard from the left. There might be some settings to change that could help fix some of the issues but it wont solve all of it so I do not recommend playing this way.
