Bomb Rush Cyberfunk

Released on 18 August 2023 for PC and Switch and 1 September 2023 for Playstation and Xbox, Bomb Rush Cyberfunk is the most fun I've had while gaming in the past few years. It is a spiritual successor to the Jet Set Radio series and is amazing for it. It takes what worked well from JSR and JSRF and turned it into a beautiful hybrid thats kinda really it's own thing.

The Story

Unlike the majority of Jet Set Radio, Bomb Rush Cyberfunk has a coherent story to follow! You start off in a cell with no information about who you are or why you are there. A guy named Tryce finds you and breaks you out. You say that your name is Faux and Tryce seems to freaks out a bit realizing who he has met. While trying to escape from the police, DJ Cyber decapitates Faux. You wake up with no memories, you find that Tryce gave you a cyberhead and that he has brought you to his hideout. Your name is now Red. Tryce catches Red back up to speed and Red meets Bel. They invite Red into their crew called Bomb Rush Cyberfunk. The three of them are now on a mission to find Faux's head.

Bomb Rush Cyberfunk figures that DJ Cyber might have Faux's head and run into him. DJ Cyber tells them the only way he will give the head back is if Bomb Rush Cyberfunk goes "all city". In this context, going all city means means ruling both the streets and the crews of New Amsterdam. From this point on, the game lets you loose and you are free to explore and tag up the streets.

This is just the begining of the story. There is more but rather then spoil all of it, I am encouraging you to play the game yourself!

Gameplay

As stated earlier, BRC takes what worked well in JSR and JSRF then made it into it's own thing. It's a homage to the extreme sports genre that has been long neglected by AAA game companies. My only real complaint is that compared to Jet Set Radio, theres no real difficulty. Jet Set Radio was notorius for having janky controls. These controls are hard to master but makes you feel on top of the world when you pull off something cool. Those moments happen all the time in BRC which kinda takes away from some of the cool factor. That being said, BRC just outright lets you do more. You get to choose when you do a trick, tricks actually benefits you, and there are achievements + missions revolving around score so it's not like they are pointless. BRC and JSR are two seperate games so treating the gameplay as the same thing is bad and you should not do it beyond the surface levels of their gameplay. If you like graffiti, dislike cops, and enjoy extreme sports games then you will love this game!

How to play

You can buy Bomb Rush Cyberfunk on Steam, GOG.com, Switch, Playstation 4 and 5, and Xbox. This game was released in 2023 on a ton of platforms so it is very accessible and not something people need to worry about archiving at the moment. However this could change at a moments notice, I will try to update this section if it does.

Tips and Tricks

  • Play with a controller for the best experience, M+KB is more then playable but the game was made with controllers in mind.
  • Check your settings to figure out what your slide button is and use it to keep combos going.
